Clean-paw Swissies hunkered down in the back of the SUV, while she and Nick strapped the boys into the back seat, and themselves into the front. With a wave to the Matthews and a promise to drop Ben off before noon tomorrow, Scarlett started to drive, Noah and Ben chattering away.

After a few miles, Nick craned his neck around to view them.

“They seem to be having a good time,” she said.

Nick settled to the front again, and she caught a glimpse of white teeth when he smiled. “The only time I see Noah that excited is when his team wins a soccer match.”

“I’m glad.” Looking out the window, the full moon had regained its friendly, romantic warmth. “You know, this ended up being a good idea.”

“Like I said, the perfect date,” Nick agreed.

“It was a great activity for Noah, too.”

“I think he’ll have some good memories.”

“He’s a great kid, Nick.”

“You were good with him. He seemed comfortable with you.”

She waited for the angst to creep in, but worry must have fallen asleep along the way. “Dogs helped.”

Nick’s laugh was deep, and she could feel the waves of contentment coming off him. She glowed from the inside out. He laid a hand on her thigh, and they drove in companionable silence a few miles.

“Life’s changed for us in the past couple of days,” he finally said, the gravel of his voice pulling at her.

She’d been hiding from that truth most of the night, but coming face-to-face with it, she had to agree.

However, she wasn’t giving it carte blanche with her heart. “Going to a couple of parties together isn’t that big a deal.”

“Feeling like part of a family again is, though.”

That sucked the breath right out of her lungs. “Nick—”

His hand wrapped around the back of her neck, and he turned in his seat to add weight to his assertion. “Admit it. The last couple of days have been good. Not scary. You’ve had fun.”

Ignoring the truth and denying it were two different things. She sighed. “I’m sure I’ll be sorry for saying this, and I completely reserve the right to take it back later, but…yes. It’s been a good couple of days. Just don’t read too much into it, okay?” she hastened to add.

He sat back in the passenger seat, a satisfied smile settling on his features. “Given half a chance, it only gets better from here. You’ll see.”
